Troubleshooting AVL

When a machine is not showing up on bustimes (or other tracking sites) it is worth remembering that several elements must work together to enable the tracking to work successfully.

Please consider the following;

1/ Is your machine sending its data to Tixiom's back office?

2/ Is the Tixiom back office transmitting your data to BODS?

3/ Is the BODS data being consumed by bustimes and/or ABODS?

These are discussed in more detail...

1/ Is your machine sending its data to Tixiom's back office?

Use Operational Status in Operations Menu. The final column shows when GPS data was received from each machine. Note – this column is only relevant when machines are signed in.

If there is no GPS data from a particular machine when it is on a trip there is no way that vehicle can show up in tracking!

2/ Is the Tixiom back office transmitting your data to BODS?

i/ Use the AVL status item in Operations Menu of tixiom back office - this shows what machines we included in our BODS data in the last AVL transmission (only vehicles on current trips are included).

Note that if we do not have BODS timetables for your services we cannot publish AVL data to BODS. If we have BODS timetables the machine will offer trip times during sign in.

When the time at which your data was transmitted is not in the last few seconds the most likely cause is that the subscription to the feed has been dropped, which is a BODS issue, which thankfully seems to happen less frequently than before. When this occurs we ask you (or your BODS agent) to create a new feed on the BODS portal.

ii/ Use the BODS AVL status item in Operations Menu of Tixiom back office - This shows the aggregated data that BODS has for each machine/vehicle and we display here what is reported by BODS own portal.

If fewer buses are showing in the BODS list than expected, please confirm that the relevant machines are sending dsata to the Tixiom back office.

3/ Is the BODS data being consumed by bustimes and/or ABODS?

Data sent to BODS will appear on bustimes and/or ABODS if it can be “matched” to a current trip in the timetable.

Bustimes are good at matching whereas BODS are very pedantic. It is also not unknown for good data to be missed/ignored by ABODS.
